Why will the Tesla Model S become iconic?
This car really has the potential to become an icon because it combines four essential facts:First: Aesthetics
The Model S is a mainstream design with a luxury outlook. This might sound contradictory, but it isn’t. On one hand, the car does not have peculiar lights like the Nissan Leaf, hidden wheels like the EV-1, or a strange form like the Prius. No, it looks very much like a normal car. At the same time, it’s size and termination doesn’t leave any doubt about it’s first class character. It can bear the comparison with Maseratis or Jaguars. With this said, I’m pretty sure a big portion of car fans will fall in love with the Tesla Model S when it hits the roads.Second: Power and performance of the Tesla Model S
Not only design, but also power… and torque. With a maximum power of 435 HP (325 kW), the Tesla Model S Performance will make fans fall in love even faster. And from the experiences with the Tesla Roadster, people won’t complain at all of the missing ROAR of the engine as soon as they feel the torque of the electric motor (see Tesla Grin). Once again, the Tesla Model S will be there to bite the Maseratis and Jaguars all around the world. Until it one day will become one of James Bond’s cars.Third: Range of the Model S
Here we have the weak point of all electric cars… so far? With a range of 300 miles (480 km) on one single charge, the Tesla Model S makes it possible for the owner to commute and do everything anyone would do on a normal day without the need of recharging on the go! It’s range by far more than a James Bond persecution. Everything you need to do is to plug it in every night at home and that’s it, which is even more comfortable than going to the petrol station every week!Last but not least: Environmental impact of the Tesla Model S
Not like conventional cars, electric vehicles can be green. They have the potential to move around and don’t be responsible for any CO2 emission at all. It really depends on the owner, and where the electricity he buys comes from. From my experience (we even had an online chat on twitter -#EVChat- on this topic last year), it is possible to buy green electricity in almost every country. So for the first time, this decision is in the owner’s hand. What will happen if the Tesla Model S become an iconic electric car?
First, the press: I’m sure the newspapers and TV shows will talk about this car, spreading it’s publicity across all the continents. Second, the specialized press: Car magazines and TV car shows won’t be ashamed to talk about the Tesla Model S. This car has the necessary outlook, power and range to be treated as a “normal” car, and even “petrol heads” will like to read about it. At the end of the day, something more special than only fame and richness of the Tesla Company should remain. Changed minds, a population that will be more open to EVs than before. This will be one of the first big stones to the mass spreading of electric cars.Your comments on the Tesla Model S

I think the Tesla becomes iconic due to the style of the car, the lines, the luxury. It will be one of those few EV’s always being bought and remembered even over 50 years.
I hope so, Joop!

Hey thanks for the article. I can’t wait for release of the Model S and future models that might be a little less expensive. Tesla is one of the most impressive companies around.
